A Message from MFHA President Tony Leahy, MFH

Encourage Juniors this Season

We’re featuring accomplishments by younger foxhunters in this eCovertside, and Masters are reminded to nominate children for our Fairly Hunted Award. Anyone under age 18 who participates in at least five hunt meets during the season qualifies. The award was created to recognize young riders in the field, who may not belong to Pony Club or other organizations that are formally associated with hunt clubs. Recipients earn a certificate and pin from the MFHA, as well as a one-year subscription to Covertside. There is no limit on the number of seasons an individual may qualify for the award (until age 18).

Apply for Hunting Habitat Conservation Award

The purpose of the Hunting Habitat Conservation Award is to recognize those foxhunting clubs, individuals and organizations that have made significant and enduring contributions towards the preservation of rural countryside and its flora and fauna. Applications for this year are due in the MFHA office September 30, 2016. Previous applicants who did not win are encouraged to reapply. The prize includes a trophy, recognition at our Annual Meeting, and a $5,000 cash award. For guidelines and entry form, please click here.

Online Performance Trial Manager Simplifies Scoring Results

Attention Performance Trials organizers — consider signing up to use our Performance Trial Manager (PTM) program, available through the MFHA website. Once you have created an account, you'll be able to login and create a customized page to share details, entry forms, and results from your event. The PTM program also includes easy-to-use menus linking back to Performance Trials rules, the Hound Database, past events, the MFHA home page, and other relevant links. Visitors to your event's page will be able to quickly get all the information they need, plus access to MFHA information in one place and will be able to quickly view each day's and cumulative results. To see a sample using the PTM, check out the Scoring results from the 2016 Carolinas Foxhound Performance Trials

Share Our Introduction to Foxhunting Guidebook

It's high summer now, but autumn hunting is just around the corner and many of us have friends who are considering riding to hounds for the first time this fall. Now is a great time to share the MFHA Foundation's Introduction to Foxhunting Guidebook, written by our Executive Director, Lt. Col. Dennis Foster. The Guidebook, which is online in an easy-to-read format and may also be purchased in MFHA's online store, is a straightforward, illustrated guide covering the basics of our sport without overwhelming a newcomer. In fewer than 50 pages, it covers history, quarry, Foxhunting 101 and 102, basic rules in the field, and insight into the role of the MFHA. Appendices include correct attire and a glossary of hunting terms. Take advantage of this member resource, provided by the MFHA Foundation, and share with potential foxhunters at summer trail rides, clinics, and hunter paces!

New Headquarters Recovering from Hail Storm Damage

A freak summer hail storm on June 16 pounded many localities in northern Virginia, including the town of Middleburg. The new MFHA headquarters building did not escape without some damage from the event, which produced pounding ice described as "softball-sized" and "unprecedented," along with high winds and flooding rains.

Hound Show Season Wraps Up

The 2016 Hound Show season has drawn to a close, with the Canadian Hound Show rounding out the competitions last month. The MFHA-sanctioned shows reflected the variety of sport across our continent, gathering breeding enthusiasts to venues in Florida, Maryland, Texas, Pennsylvania, Vermont, South Carolina, Ontario, Kansas, and Virginia.
