A Message from MFHA President Tony Leahy, MFH

MFHA Offers Guidance for New Foxhunters

If you're starting to leg up your hunt horse with some summer trail rides, consider inviting a not-yet-hunting friend to join you! It's a great opportunity for newcomers to introduce their horses to hounds and to ask questions in a casual atmosphere. We have a number of resouces available for potential foxhunters on our website, including the Introduction to Foxhunting guidebook. Children might enjoy watching their peers describe the excitement of hunting in the video at this link, and we have a guide available just for kids at our website.

Register for the Great Plains Summer Hunt Seminar

Save the date: August 5, 2017, for the Great Plains Summer Hunt Seminar in Kansas City, Missouri! This event will be a special opportunity for foxhunters in the central region of the country to get together, share ideas, and hear some terrific presentations. Speakers will include MFHA President Tony Leahy, famed huntsman and Professional Development Program coordinator Andrew Barclay, equine veterinarian, Master, and huntsman, Dr. Marvin Beeman, University of Iowa professor, Dr. Christine Petersen, equine physical therapist, Rhonda Martin and MFHA Executive Director David Twiggs. To reserve your tickets, click here.

Put the Hark Forward Celebration on Your Sporting Schedule

Hark Forward! Hound Trials dates have been set for the 2017-2018 season. Plan to participate as a rider, competitor, host, or spectator, and extend an invitation to your not-yet-foxhunting friends to come along and learn about our sport! Subject to change, the series of hound trials kick offs at Fox River Valley (IL) and Millbrook (NY) in September and continues at Moore County (NC) and Bull Run/Rappahannock (VA) in October. Check back at mfha.com for additions and updates.

Apply for MFHA District Conservation Awards

If you would like to nominate a hunt club or individual member(s) for a District Conservation Award, it's time to begin planning to submit your supporting information. Materials should be sent to your District Representative. The MFHA Foundation instituted these awards to recognize conservation efforts in the various MFHA districts, and to inspire future land conservation efforts among members of the foxhunting family. The award is an engraved silver julep cup from the MFHA Foundation, as well as a one-year subscription to Covertside.

Order "Pageant's Miraculous Journey" and Support the MFHA Foundation

The children's book, "Pageant's Miraculous Journey," is still available, with all sale proceeds donated to the MFHA Foundation. Based on the true story of one Live Oak hound's 30-mile trek home after slipping out of his leash at a veterinary hospital, "Pageant's Miraculous Journey" is a fun tale featuring Pageant's imagined sojourn back to kennels. Along the way, author Catherine Ledyard and illustrator Beth Secor follow the hound as he interacts with many native Florida wild animals, some helpful and some less helpful. Visit the MFHA website to purchase your copy.
