Fort Leavenworth Hunt (KS) has been on the road this spring, attending hound shows near and far as the season gets underway. In April, they traveled to the Southwest Hound Show, hosted by Brazos Valley Hounds (TX), and then returned home to host the Central States Hound Show last weekend. Dr. Steven Thomas, Master and huntsman, shared his report.

"Several hounds from the Fort Leavenworth Hunt (FLH) headed to the Southwest Hound Show, absent huntsman Dr. Steven Thomas, MFH but in the capable hands of kennelman Jackie Head and her daughter, Bethany. It was a long drive from Fort Leavenworth to Fort Worth, but the hearty staff and hounds fared well. Many of our hounds returned to the site where they were conceived under the watchful eye of Brazos Valley huntsman Sandy Dixon. All of the winning FLH hounds, except for FLH Richmond (drafted from Why Worry Hounds (SC)), are by Brazos Valley Baxter, Mystic or Magic.

"FLH Valor ’13 is a previous Master’s Cup Grand Champion and was pinned Champion Crossbred Dog as well as Reserve Champion of this year’s show. His littermate, FLH Vixen ’13, was the Grand Champion of the 2016 Central States Hound Show and took second place in the Entered Crossbred Bitch class in Texas.

"The previously mentioned FLH Richmond was pinned as Best Crossbred Stallion Hound. Our unentered hounds also did well, with FLH Yorktown winning the Single Crossbred Dog class and taking the red ribbon behind Valor in the Champion Crossbred Hound Class. In the Unentered Crossbred Bitch class, FLH Willow and FLH Winter took home the top two spots, as well as winning the Couple of Unentered Bitches class.

"The masters, staff and members of the Fort Leavenworth Hunt are grateful to Sandy Dixon, MFH, Brazos Valley, and her staff for their support of our breeding program and for inviting us once again to participate in the Southwest Hound Show."

Judge John Tabachka, Sewickley Hunt (PA) huntsman, selected Brazos Valley Precious as Grand Champion. Independence Foxhounds (TX) also competed and won the Pack Class. To view complete results, click here.

This month, Fort Leavenworth hounds didn't have far to travel when they hosted the Central States Hound Show. Steve Smith said, "What a wonderful day for a hound show! The weather was perfect, the crowd was large (seven hunts participated), and the hounds looked great! Congratulations to all of the hunts for showing up with great hounds, handlers, and spectators. The top three hunts, in order, were Brazos Valley, Bridlespur (MO), and Fort Leavenworth. Steve Thomas puts on a spectacular event and we hope to see even more hunts and spectators next year." John Gray, huntsman at Hillsboro Hounds (TN) judged with apprentice judges Melissa Rice and Leilani Gray.

FLH won the following classes: Crossbred Dogs - Couple, Entered: Valor and Victor; Crossbred Dog - Best Stallion Hound and overall Champion Crossbred Dog: Richmond; Crossbred Bitches - Single Bitch, Entered: Vixen.
