A Message from MFHA President Tony Leahy, MFH

Harrisburg logoLeading lady rider Jill Wilson and her mount Apple snared the Hunt Night Championship on behalf of Virginia's Keswick Hunt on Monday Night October 13 in Harrisburg, PA. Wilson and Apple placed first in the Field Hunters 35 & Under, as well as in the Ladies' Hunter Under Saddle. Their Hunt Team capped the night with a 3rd place out of 19 teams.

The evening's Reserve Champion, Mr. Stewart's Cheshire Foxhounds, owed much of its success to The Lone Spy, who finished 2nd in both the Field Hunters 36 & Over and the Ladies' Hunter Under Saddle with Cindy Buchanan, and then won the Gentlemen's Hack and placed 2nd in the Hunt Teams with Stevie Hayes in the irons.

Radnor's Rebekah Robinson and Ballaghmore Suite won the Field Hunters 36 & Over for the second year in a row, and then anchored a strong Hunt Team to win the blue. The hunt team course added a new group of 3 jumps, one for each team member, arranged such that riders following one another with perfect spacing would jump at preciseley the same moment and still maintain their spacing. The course concluded with the traditional crowd-pleasing finale jump where team members jumped side-by-side.

Perhaps the busiest rider of the night was Rose Tree huntsman Justin Shupp, who not only found time to garner 3rd in the Gentlemen's Hunter Under Saddle, and to compete in the hunt teams, but displayed his pack of Penn-Marydel Hounds to the audience between classes. Missed from this year's evening lineup was the usual hornblowing contest and the always entertaining terrier races.

Eleven hunts from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and Virginia participated in the evening's contest. Represented packs included Radnor, Cheshire, Keswick, Windy Hollow, New Market - Middletown Valley, Amwell Valley, Rose Tree, Green Spring Valley, Elkridge Harford, River Hills, and Spring Valley.
