Everyone is a Child on Their First Opening Day

Nov 13 Kids opening aTwo new foxhunters joined our ranks on Opening Day 2013 with the New Market - Middletown Valley Hounds. Henry Nylen, 10, and Brian Childs, four decades his senior, formally opened their hunting careers with this meet. Seeing the day through their eyes brings a fresh perspective to hunting veterans.

Brian has had a lifelong fascination with hunting, culture, and rode a bit as a child. As a Washington insider, he grew to know many foxhunting enthusiasts, but never took the time to ride or to engage in the sport. After following hounds during opening meet a year ago in the back of a pickup truck, he decided to pursue this dream.

Passion and Love of Sport Unite Young Foxhunters During International Foxhunting Exchange

USPC LedburyUSPC members with the Ledbury HuntFor most people, the vacation of a lifetime would take place somewhere warm; perhaps with a sandy beach, turquoise waters and palm trees. For me, my vacation of a lifetime took place in an area known for its cold, wet seasons and muddy fields. Instead of a comfortable lounging chair by the water, I was on the back of a horse. And instead of swimming with dolphins or touring the local attractions, I was galloping behind a pack of foxhounds. All of this because instead of Bali or Mexico or the Caribbean, where most "normal" people choose to spend their vacation, I was in England, riding with distinguished hunts such as the Bicester with Whaddon Chase, the Vale of the White Horse, and the Ledbury.
