A Four-Year-Old Shares Her Thoughts on Hunting

Miss Piper Ellis, 4, has enjoyed a busy summer undertaking many adventures with her wonderful small pony, Roman. Under the watchful eye of Piper's mom, Solange Ellis of Horsehaven Stables in Hinckley, Ohio, the young equestrian has participated in numerous activities with Chagrin Valley Hunt. These include the Independence Day Parade (for which palomino Roman was transformed into a red fox with black points), parade of hounds at the Cleveland Grand Prix, and an early start to autumn hunting.

Photo Gallery: Foxhunting Kids Achieve at USPC Eastern Championships

Many junior members of our hunts competed at United States Pony Clubs' (USPC) Eastern Championships, held July 27-31, at Tryon International Equestrian Center. Demonstrating the skill and versatility that hours in the hunt field develop, these young riders excelled in a variety of disciplines. From showjumping to games, children affiliated with MFHA hunts earned excellent placings in top competition. Enjoy this photo gallery of our future leaders.

Boys & Girls Clubs Visit Keswick Hunt Kennels

A happy kennel visitor. Photo by AudibertPhoto.

On Tuesday, June 28, Keswick Hunt Club welcomed a group of children from the Boys & Girls Clubs of Orange to their Clubhouse and Kennels in Albemarle County, Virginia. The youngsters first heard from whipper-in and historian Barclay Rives about the goals and planning involved in organized foxhunting. Nancy Wiley, MFH, a former board member of the Boys & Girls Clubs, encouraged the children to share their outdoor experiences and to be keen observers of nature and wild animals.

Arapahoe Hunt Pony Club Tops Live Oak Challenge Awards

The Live Oak Hounds USPC Foxhunting Challenge Award is presented to the six Pony Clubs which regularly take the greatest percentage of their members out hunting. Arapahoe Hunt Pony Club, a relatively new chapter, was the top recipient of the Challenge Award for 2016. Their District Commissioner, Elizabeth Gillmor, described the group as "a small foxhunting-based pony club, formed in 2013, with the goal of providing formalized support and instruction to junior members of the Arapahoe Hunt."

Farmington Hunt Connects With 4-H Club

Earlier this month, Farmington Hunt (VA) huntsman, Matthew Cook, and I visited the Hoof-n-Woof 4-H Club in Albemarle County to introduce the young riders to foxhunting and encourage them to join us in the field. 4-H is an active youth organization in Virginia, and since Farmington seeks to increase junior participation, it made sense to reach out - and bring a few extra hunt horns, whips, and one couple of friendly hounds along to help.
