The Old Dominion Hounds (VA) will be hosting the 2018 Junior North American Field Hunter Championship this coming November. The Championship finals will be held on Saturday, November 10. We're hoping that by having the Championship on Saturday it will help families that travel. Old Dominion has also invited us to stay for hunting on Sunday. We are going to have a great weekend of fun, competition, and hunting. We are working with hunts right now to set Qualifying Hunt Meet dates - our working schedule to date follows below.

For those not familiar with the format, children under age 18 register and ride in a qualifying meet to earn a place at the finals. The entry fee of $75 allows the junior to ride in as many qualifying meets as he or she would like, in addition to the championship. Dozens of hunts designate a particular meet as their qualifier. On that day, children are expected to arrive with a clean horse or pony and tack and proper turnout for the rider. Braiding is discouraged. There will be a minimum of three judges, judging both the hilltopping (second field) and first flight divisions. The first flight division is divided between ages 12 and under, and 13 and over (to the age of 18). The judges may rotate through the fields or judge one specific field. At the end of the days’ hunting, the judges will review their cards and decide which pairs (rider and mount) qualify for the finals.

The final competition begins with a judged equitation on the flat class and is followed by a 45 minute (give or take) mock hunt. The judges will then select at least ten riders from each division to ride in a final test. The final test is generally comprised of several jumps, a gate, dropped rail, a water crossing, and/or any other tasks the judges deem appropriate.
