Last summer, we highlighted the pedigree and performance record of Hillsboro Brighton '12. With the season underway, we touch base again with huntsman John Gray, who shares some insights into hound evaluation and his breeding decisions for this bloodline: His recent Hark Forward Performance Trials Champion, Hillsboro Salty '15, has been bred to one of Brighton's sons. Here are his thoughts on various performance trials winners in that pedigree.

Our Salty that won the Hark Forward championship has a sire, Flinstone '11, that placed in the top ten in performance trial competition. His sire, Goblin '04, also finished in the top ten at trials and won the Sanctioned Performance Trial Hound conformation class at the Virginia Foxhound Show two years in a row.

On the bottom side, Flinstone goes back to Long Run Flute '96 (a draft from when Long Run changed over to Penn-Marydels) who was Hillsboro's first field trial winner. Flute was not originally entered in that competition, and she was only substituted for her brother when he came up lame. Flute was bred to our Staunton '99, whose sire, Roanoke '97, was the first hound viewed in a field trial to account for a coyote.

We have just bred Salty to Britain, a young handsome dog with a big voice. His sire is Brighton, who was third overall at the 2016 Bell Meade field trial and, like Salty's grandsire, winner of the Sanctioned Performance Trial Hound class at Virginia.

Brighton was a gift from the North Cotswold (UK) in 2012. Britain's Dam, Graphic '14, is a bold hunter and she is a lovely mover. Her dam, North Cotswold Greystone '08, was also a gift from the North Cotswold in 2009. Graphic's sire, Jethro '08, is by Potomac Jefferson '05, who has added the best American blood to our pack.

With all the phenomenal hunters in these lines, there are just as many that have recieved top honors showing, as well. The conformation to ensure their longevity is there. Salty's half sister Walnut '17 (both out of our Sable '13) was last year's Grand Champion at both the Southern Hound Show and the Virginia Foxhound Show.

Salty's and Walnut's dam, Sable, was a gift to us from Live Oak as a puppy. Sable went on to win many ribbons as an unentered hound and also went on to enter well into the pack. We were looking to "upgrade" the quality of our pack, so we bred her to Flinstone - a well put together, proven hunter with a pedigree full of proven hunters. It is amazing to be rewarded with this exciting cross five years later.
