Bull Run Hunt Club (VA) members gathered on the evening of July 8, 2017 at Inskeep Hall in Mitchells, Virginia, for the annual puppy show and naming party. This celebration of our young hounds has become one of the favorite special events on our calendar. Huntsman Charles Montgomery skillfully presented the unentered hounds, Brawler, Dingo, Wallace, Gordon, Smitty and Skye to honorary judges John Harrison, Deep Run Hunt (VA) huntsman, and Kelly Burdge, Howard County-Iron Bridge (MD) huntsman.

As the first class of hound judging got underway, the ladies showed off their hats to make sure they were noticed for the hat contest. The winner of the hat contest was later announced as this writer, Davera Ackenbom, sporting a sweeping peach hat with multicolored feathers.

Show organizer Adrianna Waddy explained that after hound judging finished, the Changing of the Collar would take place for all unentered dogs and bitches. This ceremony marks the young hounds' moving from unentered status to joining the pack in the field. Unentered Skye was the overall champion hound, Bellmaid champion unentered bitch, and Lancer and Primrose were champion entered dog and bitch, respectively.

Auctioneer Bucky Hill stepped forward to start the bidding for sponsorship of all the hounds that participated in the hound show. All proceeds collected go to the Magnum Memorial Hound Fund. This fund has been set up to take care of hound needs and unexpected emergencies. Enthusiastic and generous club members Fred Burks, Masters Rosie Campbell and Jay Moore, Adrianna Waddy, Andy Stahling, Billy Hill, Gale Berry, Chris Allen, Gwen Hill, Joe Kinchloe, Meridith Wade, Susan Travellan, Bucky Waddy, Carl Kinchloe, Lindsay Robbins and Fred Wellins kept the bidding fun, fast, furious and profitable.

The absolute favorite and most heartwarming moments of the evening were saved for last. Ten 2017 puppies were presented to be auctioned for sponsorship and naming rights. All puppies' names had to begin with the letter “T” or “N.” Our hearts melted as the eight week old puppies made their appearance one by one. The lucky sponsors and their winning puppy names are the following:

Jay Moore, MFH - male puppy, Taylor; Gwen Hill - male puppy, Noah; Gale Berry - female puppy, Natty; Susan Travellin - female puppy, Tara; Joe Kinchloe - male puppy, N-Joe; Carl Kinchloe - female puppy, Nottaway; Lindsay Robbins - male puppy, Nitro; Chris Allen - male puppy, Tincup; Fred Wellins - male puppy, T-Joe; Bucky Waddy - male puppy, Thomas.

Everyone then gathered in the Bull Run Hunt clubhouse for a barbecue dinner with all the fixings. Judy Allen's famous rum cake was auctioned off in the last of the evening's bidding wars. A fun filled evening was had by one and all. Come join us next year!
